04.20.10 // UNLV Music Graduate Receives Prestigious Fulbright Fellowship

Jason Thorpe Buchanan Chosen as Part of Flagship International Educational Exchange Program

LAS VEGAS - APRIL 20, 2010 - Jason Thorpe Buchanan, a UNLV graduate student in Composition, was recently awarded a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to Germany for studies and research at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg, Germany. In addition, he has earned admission to the distinguished Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY as a candidate for the PhD in Composition and also has been granted admission deferral until the Fall of 2011 in order to first complete his Fulbright residency in Germany... 06.13.09 // A Zarzuela & Other Lost Works - Tokyo Premiere

Jason Thorpe Buchanan's first work for wind ensemble received its premiere on Thursday, June 11 by the Tad Wind Symphony, a world renowned ensemble in its 16th season.  Jason was able to spend six days in Tokyo to attend rehearsals and the concert.  The professional group is directed by Japanese maestro Takayoshi "Tad" Suzuki, who resides in the United States and returns to Japan twice a year to conduct the Wind Symphony.  The live performance will be released on their highly regarded CD series "Tad Wind Concert Vol. 7" on the Windstream record label, Japan in late 2009.  You can watch video excerpts of the performance, as well as purchase scores and parts here.

05.11.09 // Bye-Bye Bin Laden awarded Best Feature:

The animated musical satire Bye-Bye Bin Laden, was recently announced the Best Feature
at the 2009 South Beach International Animation Film Festival.  We each worked very hard
on this film during the 2006/2007 year, and you can see from the credits below how heavily involved we really were in this project!  We are very proud of the film's success and our individual involvement, particularly as the first and only feature length animation ever to
be made at a university.  This animated musical satire will be distributed by Cinequest.  View the press release here.

04.13.09 // Updates:

There are many exciting things happening for us here at Melos Music!
Here are just a handful of the latest headlines:

Daniel Foley was recently accepted for the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Trossingen,
in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany. He will leave the US in August and begin studies at the Hochschule in October, returning to the US next summer. His focus will be
in classical guitar performance with additional music subjects including composition.

Jason Thorpe Buchanan was recently selected as a fellow for six weeks at the Brevard Institute of Music and Summer Festival.  He will receive several grants and merit scholarships for composition studies and travel to both Brevard and Tokyo from the
Brevard Institute, UNLV and Mu Phi Epsilon. Jason was also recently announced winner
of the Mu Phi Epsilon composition competition, Division II (Graduate).

Patrick Chan (B.M.), Jason McChristian (B.M.) and Mark DeSimone (M.A.) will each be receiving their respective degrees in composition four weeks from now at San José State University and are each making plans for further study in composition.

**Update** Patrick Chan will be attending Bowling Green State University in Ohio
as a Masters degree candidate in composition with a TAship.

03.08.09 // Concert Updates:

This Wednesday, March 11, three new works by Melos composers will be premiered in Las Vegas, NV and in San José, CA. Jason Thorpe Buchanan's Songs of Moonlight & Shadows will be premiered by NEXTET under the direction of Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann, and Kãrttikeya will be premiered by award-winning pianist Cristina Valdes.

Jason McChristian's work for orchestra Vis machina will be premiered by the San José
State University Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Janet Averett. The San José Examiner has an article on the concert including the premiere of Vis machina here.

03.02.09 // News:

Several members of Melos Music were involved in a film project last year that will be showing at this years Cinequest Film Festival. The first screening of Generic Thriller is Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 PM in the San Jose Repertory Theatre downtown. The second screening is the morning of Sunday, March 8, 11:30 AM, in the California Theatre on First Street, San Jose, CA. For more information visit cinequest.org

We would like to welcome our first affiliated composer, Dennis Deovides A. Reyes III, whose works strongly contrast and compliment the rest of our catalogue. We encourage you to visit his page and preview his compositions which will be available shortly.

02.01.09 // 2nd quarterly Newsletter:

Earlier today (or yesterday I suppose), those subscribed to our mailing list received our
latest newsletter, full of concert listings, articles, new works and announcements. You

There are several announcements that have recently come to our attention that we feel are worth mentioning here as well:

Jason McChristian has been selected as co-winner of the SJSU concerto competition to have his latest work for Orchestra Vis machina, performed by the San Jose State University Symphony Orchestra on March 11 at 7pm in San Jose.

Jason Thorpe Buchanan was announced winner of the Cristena Valdes (Guest Artist) solo piano composition competition. A solo recital by Ms. Valdes including the premiere of Karttikeya (Study No. 1) will take place, coincidentally also on March 11 at 8pm in Las Vegas, immediately following a new music concert where Songs of Moonlight & Shadows will also be premiered.

Jason McChristian, Mark DeSimone, and Patrick Chan will each be presenting solo composition recitals this coming spring.   These recitals will feature multiple works for various instrumental combinations and promise to be exciting demonstrations of the talented composers represented by of Melos Music.
