Stemming from a fascination of the desert Between Cruel Sand and a Scornful Sun features a snake-like figure that waves between two pitches in a trill-like fashion. This idea is the basis for much of the material found in the work, including several seemingly improvised solos. The work is further unified by a cohesive harmonic language and modern timbral effects. A six-note syncopated figure emerges in the final section of the work and is as unrelenting as the sense of desolation one might find in a barren landscape.
