During the period of time when I was composing this work, I was learning a lot about jazz music and the music of Maurice Ravel.   In retrospect, I find that these two influences inadvertently made their way into my compositional process.   The whole piece is based on three small motivic ideas, which are all stated within the opening section.   Each of these reappear throughout the music, often with a different character than before.   In the final section, these themes coalesce into a stormy climax, where all three seemingly disparate ideas are unified, before finally returning to the opening mood and dissipating into silence.
